INDUSTRY.co.id - Kupang- Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said Kupang, NTT's flight route to Darwin, Australia will reopen to optimize fish exports.
In his review to the port and airport facilities in NTT and NTB, Sunday (10/9/2017) Minister of Transportation Budi Karya said it would build an economic base in Kupang by increasing shipments of fish to Jakarta and Surabaya first.
"We know there is connectivity from Kupang to Darwin, I ask that collectors and fishermen to send fish to Surabaya and Jakarta should be exported to Darwin," said Minister of Transportation.
Minister of Transportation explained that at least Kupang-Darwin flight to optimize fish exports takes about three months by building a fishery business first about one to two months.
Thus, the movement of goods, especially sea freight returns can be filled because all this time only carrying passengers. Once the business is perceived to have been built, exports of fish in large quantities can be done.
Ministry of Transportation and Local Government will ensure in terms of logistics, the number of passengers to know the type of fish needed in Australia.
East Nusa Tenggara Governor Frans Lebu Raya expressed his appreciation for efforts to develop and optimize economy and connectivity in NTT.
He hoped that the flight route from Kupang (NTT) to Dili (East Timor) and Darwin (Northern Australia) that could be crowded in the 1990s can be reopened soon.
"Until the year 1999 there was still a flight to Darwin, then it came again and 2013 stopped again," he said.
Flight Route from Kupang to Darwin last opened in 2013 served by maxima Merpati Nusantara Airlines but is no longer open because the company went bankrupt.
