INDUSTRY.co.id - Jakarta- Conventional retail business is experiencing such tremendous shocks. PT Matahari Department Store Tbk closed its two outlets in Pasaraya Blok M and Pasaraya Manggarai at the end of September.
Not only in Indonesia, the closure of retail outlets increasingly prevalent occurs globally. Latest, Giant supermarket giant announced the discontinuation of its five stores in Malaysia.
As the conventional retail business collapsed, the TransMart group even increased its outlets. The local tycoon, the owner of CT Corp's business empire, Chairul Tanjung, is even more expansive by opening 30 new TransMart outlets across Indonesia until the end of 2018.
"We feel in this era is the best era for our investment," said the man who is familiarly called CT to INDUSTRY.co.id in Bekasi, last weekend.
He added, until the end of the year we will open 23 TransMart. "Yesterday we just opened in Palembang, afterwards in Mando, Solo and Pasaraya Blok-M," he said.
Furthermore he said, every week, especially weekdays (weekdays) the number of transactions posted in a TransMart outlet of 6,000 transactions. While the number of visitors can be 100,000 per weekdays and 150,000 per weekend (weekend).
According to him, these closed shops can not accommodate the changing times that began to enter the disruptive era.
In this disruptive era, millennial generation activities never escape the use of smart devices. Everything is done with smart devices. Only, now they do not have enough money to shop.
"But five years from now, surely they have enough money to shop in. This is an enormous potential. Imagine, every year there are 4 million new births in Indonesia," said the figure who is often nicknamed "The Son of Cassava".
Nevertheless, he sees, the current portion of physical retail store transactions is still dominant rather than e-commerce.
"The use of technology for commerce or e-commerce is a necessity, it can not be denied, but the disruptive era is not just about technology, but also changes in behavior and lifestyle," he said.
Therefore, Chairul believes, if many visitors who do swafoto or selfie, then spread the photo on social media, means that the store sold.
"I do not care about the menu that is served well or baseball. An important good for the selfie, must be crowded and behavioral," he added.
There is also an investment needed to realize the plan of 30 new outlets of TransMart is worth Rp 300 billion per one outlet. That means CT Corp must spend around Rp 9 trillion.
