Indonesia Elected Member of ILO Governing Body

INDUSTRY.co.id - Indonesia has been chosen as a regular member of the Governing Body (GB) of the International Labour Organization (ILO) for the 2021-2024 period and will represent the Asia Pacific region along with Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Pakistan.

During the 19th International Labour Conference (ILC) that was held online on Monday (14/06), Indonesia garnered 210 out of 230 total votes. Indonesia being a regular member of GB-ILO is a token of international acknowledgement on the country’s commitment in advancing social justice and promoting decent work, which are the main mandates of the ILO.

Indonesia also continues to support the advancement of decent work reflected by the tripartite cooperation between governments, businesspersons, and labor unions joined in the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation.

Besides being a regular member of GB-ILO, Indonesia is also the coordinator of ASEAN countries for the ILO, paving the way for the Southeast Asian nation to push for ILO’s programs that align with the national interests of Indonesia and other countries’ in the region.

Indonesia was also a deputy member of GB-ILO for the 2014-2017 period, which continued to the 2017-2020 period. It reflects the trust of the ILO’s member countries in Indonesia to once again carry the mandate of decision making at the ILO.

For the record, GB-ILO is an executive secretariat of the ILO that consists of 56 countries and play a strategic role in determining policies, budgets, programs, and election of the General Director of the ILO.

As a regular member of GB-ILO, Indonesia also has a voting right for a host of discussions on the governance of the ILO.
