INDUSTRY.co.id - Jakarta - Lately the underage marriages have now begun to be frequently spoken by the media. In a relatively young age, a child mentally / psychologically is not ready to face marriage. Early marriage increases the risk of maternal and child mortality. The quality of children born is low.

Lenny N. Rosalin, Deputy for Child Growth and Development at the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, said that early marriage is believed to extend the poverty chain.

"Children who get married at an early age can no longer get the right to education. In fact, besides being able to become a ladder for society to change their social status, education is the most important thing to shape personality, gain experience, and form a brilliant generation of nation. "he said in Jakarta, Monday (08/06/2018).

He said the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) in collaboration with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2016 had collected information about the level of education taken by women aged 20 24 years who had ever married who had married under or above 18 years.

He said, the results were quite alarming, as much as 94.72% of women aged 20 24 years who had ever married who were married under the age of 18 or the age of the children were no longer attending school, while those who were still attending school were only 4.38%.

Women aged 20 24 years who have ever married who are married at the age of children also tend to have lower education than those who marry above the age of 18.

So far, the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Yohana Yembise is pushing for a revision of Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage, especially the article that regulates the age limit for marriage.

"We recommend that the minimum marriage limit be increased, especially for women, because the age of 16 is still classified as a child or not yet an adult," he said.
