President Jokowi Calls for Tree-Planting Movement in Anticipation of Climate Change
INDUSTRY.co.id - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called on people across the country to promote tree-planting movement as part of efforts to tackle climate change and global warming.
“This tree-planting initiative is not limited to only today, but it will be carried out simultaneously throughout all provinces in Indonesia, in response to climate change, in response to global warming, in response to the pollution that we’ve vividly experienced and felt,” President Jokowi said after attending the Joint Tree Planting Movement event at JIEP Forest in Pulo Gadung Industrial Estate, East Jakarta, Wednesday (11/29).
The President said that the current rainy season can serve as a momentum to carry out mass tree-planting.
“We didn’t do it earlier because it was still the dry season. This is the rainy season in December and going forward. We will do it continuously in all provinces, in all provinces, not only in the Greater Jakarta area,” he said.
President Jokowi also told government officials at the central and regional levels, such as the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), to be aware of potential floods.
“Everyone should remain vigilant, BNPB, at the central and regional levels should be on alert. In addition, I once again invite all people to plant any tree in their respective neighborhoods, any tree,” he said.
For the record, the tree-planting in capital Jakarta was carried out in more than 900 spots.
The President also expressed appreciation to related parties such as the Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulogadung (JIEP), Real Estate Indonesia (REI), Association of Indonesia Forest Concession Holders (APHI), and others for their support in making today’s tree-planting happen.
