The Shipyard Industry Has a role for the National Economy
INDUSTRY.co.id - Jakarta- Minister of Industry (Menperin), Airlangga Hartarto today (22/10/2017) inaugurated graving dock facility owned by PT Samudera Marine Indonesia (SMI).
"The addition of this new facility will increase production capability to support the process of building new vessels as well as reparation," said Airlangga in Serang, Banten (22/10/2017).
According to Airlangga, shipbuilding industry is a strategic industry that has a vital role for the national economy.
"The characteristics of a labor-intensive, capital-intensive and technogic-intensive shipping industry require serious handling and attention from the government so as to develop and competitiveness," Airlangga added.
Furthermore, Airlangga added that the national shipping industry aside from being one of the strategic industries has also achieved some progress such as increasing the number of shipyards to 250 companies with a production capacity of about 1 million DWT per year for new buildings and 12 million DWT per year for ship repairs .
"In the future it is expected that production capacity for new buildings and ship repairs will continue to be improved," Menperin said.
Menperin hopes, with the operation of two units of graving dock facilities of PT SMI, each with 280 m X 45 m and 320 m X 55 m can increase the capacity of the national shipyard industry.
Airlangga asserted, with the inauguration of PT SMI graving dock facility, hopefully able to inspire other shipping industry to continuously improve production capability in the framework of development of national shipping industry.
