INDUSTRY.co.id - Kuala Lumpur - 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), appealed to Myanmar Government Advisor, Aung San Suu Kyi, to act immediately to overcome her Rohingya crisis.
"Rohingya is a very serious problem, we hope as a friend of Myanmar, Myanmar is really serious to manage this problem," said SBY after becoming the keynote speaker of Southeast Asia Democracy Seminar: Achievements, Challenges and Prospects in Kuala Lumpur, Saturday (2/9 / 2017), organized by the Malaysian National Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) If mismanagement, he says, let alone systematic killings are happening nowadays with any reason could lead to gross human rights violations, "ethnic cleansing" or "genocide".
"And it is very hard because we are subject to human rights, not subject to the ASEAN charter, whereas all members must respect democracy, human rights and the rule of law so that it can not be separated from it," he said.
SBY asserted himself to follow the developments in Myanmar and ethnic Rohingya problem is already exceeding propriety.
"I understand the issue of Rohingya is a complex issue for Myanmar, this issue is very sensitive for Myanmar but although complex and sensitive there should be no solution, it must be a solution. The solution must be fair, wise, permanent while referring to human rights, democratic values and international law, "he said.
He expects the Rohingya conflict not to cause a wave of radicalism and terrorism and not to become inter-religious conflicts whose impact is even more serious.
"We are still hoping that Myanmar with Aung San Suu Kyi can do something, this is the world's attention, not just the Islamic countries, not only Indonesia and Malaysia but ASEAN and the world," he said.
He thinks ASEAN should also do something and should not say this is just a domestic affair of Myanmar.
"We have a tradition of not interfering in the member countries but in this case it does not matter. Remember we have a 'new ASEAN charter.'" So the 'community' and in the charter are clear, all countries should respect democracy, human rights and 'rule of law' So it is obligatory for Myanmar and all to solve this problem because it has touched on human rights, 'rule of law' and democracy, "he said.
He said Myanmar is his own family because it must do something rather than later taken over the world.
"I have several times communications with Myanmar leaders, from one leader to another, I have been to Myanmar with the main agenda of Rohingnya, Indonesia has done humanitarian, education, health, we do not enter the politics, then I convey to carry out democracy and handle Rohingya, "he said as quoted by Antara.
SBY said President Jokowi and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi had given a good statement but should be more than a statement.
"I have to take the initiative with other leaders to take the initiative to overcome the outbreak of killing My hope for Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, the world has crowned her as a person of peace, a lot of hope to her Now is the time to show her 'wisdom' he said.
