Growing 10 Percent, Ministry of Industry Invites Millennials Take advantage of Digital Industry Potential

INDUSTRY.co.id - Jakarta - In the last six years, the digital industry in Indonesia has grown from 9.98 to 10.7 percent per year, twice the growth of the national economy.

Therefore, Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto invites millenial generation (generation born between 1980s and 2000s) to continue to take advantage of opportunities and potential of digital industry in Indonesia.

"Starting in 2019, the national digital industry is projected to grow above 11 percent per year because the entire archipelago will be connected by the Internet network," said Minister of Industry in Jakarta, Monday (18/12/2017).

This is in line with the target of Palapa Ring optical broadband development project which is planned to be completed by the end of 2018.

Airlangga see, some startup company e-commerce in Indonesia, pioneer comes from millennial generation. However, this generation needs to be encouraged to be able to determine long-term strategy so that their business can last long.

"They should be reunited in an ecosystem so that the composition is balanced based on its generation," he said.

Based on the research of Michael Page in 2016, the development of the lively digital industry lately in Indonesia, a trigger growth in the number of job vacancies in this sector up to 60 percent in the last year.

The corporate segment is predicted to contribute the largest job vacancy in the digital technology sector, such as e-commerce, financial technology (fintech), logistics, and big data.

Meanwhile, referring to recent research results on digital-based startup investments in Southeast Asia from Google and Temasek entitled "e-Economy SEA Spotlight 2017" released last week, the two companies are calculating the value of investments into Asian startup digital Southeast Asia reached USD12 billion during 2016 until the third quarter of 2017.

Of the total funds, as much as 34 percent or USD4.08 billion into Indonesia. It is estimated that the current investment value is greater, considering that after the third quarter of 2017, there have been US $ 7 billion funds flowing to Southeast Asia, including to the country.

This research also mentions that most of the investments are in a startup that holds Unicorn status or has valuations in excess of USD 1 billion. The four Unicorn Indonesia is Go-Jek, Traveloka, Tokopedia, and Bukalapak.

The E-Commerce Association of Indonesia (idEA) notes that currently there are 305 companies in the digital services sector in the country with various types of core business.

The types of digital industry that exist in Indonesia, namely the banking industry, advertising, trading, dailydeals, directory, digital infrastructure, operating systems, search engines, IT consultants, marketplace, online retail, payment gateway, and travel.

To support the development of digital economy in Indonesia, according to Airlangga, the government is working to attract more investor interest to invest in the country.

"Various ways to do, from the start of infrastructure development to licensing facilities are fixed so that more and more business players are investing in Indonesia," he concluded.
