ASEAN, UN to Enhance Cooperation in Maintaining Regional Peace

INDUSTRY.co.id - On the margin of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Thursday (09/07) hosted Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres in a bilateral meeting at the Kakatua room, Jakarta Convention Center, Special Capital Region of Jakarta.
During the meeting, President Jokowi expressed concern over the current global situation and stated that the expectation for the UN is getting bigger to create world peace.
“Your Excellency, synergy between ASEAN and the UN is needed to maintain peace and to address important issues in the region, including the issue of Myanmar,” President Jokowi said.
According to the President, ASEAN has also contributed to the Indo-Pacific region through the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
“Regarding the Indo-Pacific, ASEAN is once again contributing through ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific which translates into concrete cooperation,” he added.
On the occasion, the Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership and diplomatic efforts in ASEAN and the G20. Guterres also expressed desire to continue to develop cooperation between the UN and Indonesia as well as with ASEAN.
“We are determined to develop and start as much as possible our cooperation between Indonesia and our cooperation with ASEAN. Congratulations, Mr. President, on your absolutely outstanding leadership of ASEAN during this period,” Guterres said. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/UN) (GWH/MUR)
