INDUSTRY.co.id - In a bid to intensify the Government’s efforts to reduce vulnerability of the capital Jakarta area to flooding, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) is completing the construction of two dams, namely the Sukamahi and the Ciawi Dams in Bogor Regency.

The construction of the two dams is part of the Jakarta flood control master plan, which according to the work contract will be completed in 2021.

The construction progress of the Ciawi Dam, which began construction in December 2016, has reached 71 percent and the land acquisition progress has reached 96 percent. Minister of PUPR Basuki Hadimuljono said that he was optimistic that the construction of this dam could be completed soon in July 2021.

“As the land acquisition is now complete, the construction can be completed in the near future,” he said, as quoted from the Ministry’s website on Sunday (9/5).

Basuki added that another challenge during the construction process of the Ciawi Dam is the weather, especially rain, which often occurs throughout the year.

“To deal with this issue, we cover the land when it rains and when the weather is good, we work on it layer by layer,” he said.

After it is completed, trees will be planted in the surrounding area as nature conservation.

The Ciawi Dam is planned to have a storage volume of 6.05 million cubic meters and an inundation area of 39.40 hectares. This dam is designed to reduce the flood that flows to Jakarta by blocking the water flow from Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango before reaching the Katulampa Dam which then flows into the Ciliwung River. The completion of the Ciawi Dam construction is projected to reduce flooding by 111.75 meters per second.
