Minister of Agriculture Amran Determined to Realize Self-Sufficiency Garlic 2021

INDUSTRY.co.id - Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Amran Sulaiman is determined to realize the garlic self-sufficiency program in 2021 so that the fulfillment of food commodity needs can be done from the domestic from the imported.
After attending the ceremony on the birthday of Pancasila at the Central Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Jakarta, Friday (2/5/2018), he said, referring to the roadmap, for garlic self-sufficiency requires garlic production 550 thousand tons with planting area of 80 thousand hectares.
"This program must be pursued and realized, we must be able to reverse from the current conditions, where 96 percent of garlic consumption is met from imports, in 2021 it has to be self-sufficient and even export," he said.
Minister of Agriculture asserted that if the planting area of 2017 is only 2,000 hectares then the year 2021 should be pursued to reach 80 thousand hectares.
Amran explained to achieve the target of self-sufficiency has been done to identify the potential of land according to agro-ecosystem of 600 thousand hectares.
The government will provide superior seeds, boost planting area and import controls, he added, in addition every importer is required to plant and produce 5 percent of the volume of applications for import recommendation.
Meanwhile, the development of planting area is obtained from the state budget support, self-help farmers, investors and mandatory planting importers.
"Developing agriculture is not only about managing the technical aspects, but improving the governance, as well as the direction of Mr. President, we are comprehensively upgrading including business processes and mental reforms, and the added value of downstream and trade management must be achieved for the welfare of farmers," he said.
